If you would like to go to silent place to be relaxing in Kyoto, Oharano area should be a good option.

We love Kyoto very much for traveling domestic in Japan and also the city is the most popular place for foreign tourists. Because the popularity is increasing , it is to be crowded more and more unfortunately especially at famous places like Kiyomizu dear, Kinkakuji. But still there are many silent places with few visitors where you can feel good atmosphere with nice traditional architectures, gardens and nature.  For that purpose "Oharano" should be a good option. 

"Oharano" is located west around 15 km from center of Kyoto city. There are mountains and forest keeping nature and nice old temples and shrines existing. So you can enjoy good walking along narrow streets. In spring you can enjoy seeing beautiful flowers including cherry blossom and also getting bamboo shoot around April because there are many bamboo groves.  Also you can see beautiful autumn leaves around middle of Nov.

Main temples and shrine

1. Shoujiji (勝持寺）

This small temple has good garden with cherry trees and maple trees. So it is famous as flower temple.

Even without flowers or autumn leaves you can feel nice silent feeling.

2. Gantokuji (願徳寺）

　　 This small temple is located just next to Shoujiji but there is no garden but they have national treasure of statue of Buddha,Nyoirinkannon(如意輪観音) which is very beautiful sculpture.

3. Oharano jinjya (shrine) (大原野神社) 

　　　This large shrine has long history to be established around 8 A.D. There is nice pond and you can be relaxing.

4. Yonemine dera (善峯寺) 

   This temple is large located in a mountain with around 100 K square meters and has established since 1029. There are many cherry trees and maple trees.

*Please note "Oharano" is different from "Ohara" where "Sanzen in" is located.

How to reach Oharano from center of Kyoto city

1.By JR line

   (1) Take JR line to go to Mukoumachi station

   (2)Take a bus of Hankyu or taki from Mukoumachi station 

Bus of #66 can reach Yoshimine dera

Bus of #63 can reach Oharano jinjya (shrine) 

2.By Hankyu train line

  (1) Take Hankyu train line from Kawaramachi od Karasuma to Katsura station.

  (2) Take a bus of Kyoto city or taki from Katsura station

  To get off at Minamikasugacho (Oharano jinjya) bus stop for Oharano jinjya(shrine) 

Snowing even after blooming cherry blossom in Tokyo.

 Yesterday we had snowing in Tokyo surprisingly!  As long as I remember it was first time for me to see such heavy snowing after blooming cherry blossom in Tokyo. Also it was so cold that we need to wear coat or heavy jacket. Still it is cold today and according to a weather report it continue cold until this weekend, 

Last week we enjoyed watching cherry blossom ( Hanami, 花見) but because we had snow and rain and it took time, the blossom has finished almost in Tokyo.  If you would like to see this time, please visit mountain area or north area.  I heard it should be good in May in Hokkaido.
