As large historical architectures in Japan there are many castles existing. You might be interested in seeing them when you visit Japan. But unfortunately many castles were destroyed by many reasons including the world war II after edo period finished. So many castles are not original and have been rebuilt. Currently there are only following 12 castles keeping original. I recommend you to visit the original one. In Osaka, western large city there is famous large Osaka castle but it is rebuilt one and not original.
Out of original the Himeji Castle is largest and famous as world cultural heritage and national treasure and very beautiful white castle. Just it has been repaired and it will open from Mar 2015. I highly recommend to visit it. If you visit Kyoto, it takes around one hour by the shinkansen from Kyoto to Himeji. And the castle is located not far from the Himeji station.
Just I remind you the castles were built after around 16 B.C. and they are not older compared with historic temples ans shrines which have history from around 7 B.C. with the oldest one.
